This article aims to analyze the concept of “common interest(公利)” held by Sim Daeyun(沈大允), a Confucian intellectual in late Chosŏn Dynasty. And It focuses on Sim Daeyun’s Welfare Encyclopedia(Pongni Chŏnsŏ, 福利全書), which typically elucidated to the common people the heavenly rule of blessing the good and making the bad miserable, also some of his commentaries on Confucian classics, and Paegun Transcript(Paegun Munch’o, 白雲文抄), his representative book of proses. Sim Daeyun employs the concepts of “desire” and “interest” to interpret human nature, and considers the innate desire to pursue interests as the mandate of heaven. From the point that all the beings seek advantages and avoid disadvantages, he believes that “good”(善) is absolute. And therefore he stresses that the judgment of good and evil should be based on the success or failure of gains and losses. However, he upholds a Confucian intellectual’s traditional position of advocating all the community members’ common interests instead of purely individual’s private interests. He argues that one should pursue interests together with other people and only through this way could one’s own interests be realized, because the realization of interests necessitates relations with others. By classifying the whole world’s common interests(天下同利), interest with constrained private interests, into “justice”(義), he renovates the debate over justice and interest(義利之辨) or argument on public and private(公私論) in the Doctrine of Chu-tzu(朱子學) with the core concept of “interest”. But it depends on a question related with calculation of gains and losses of all the community members, in other words, the question of how to mediate individuals’ propensity of pursuing interests to achieve ideal society’s common interests. Although he criticizes an indiscriminately harmony society regardless of natural self-love or the relative degree of intimacy, Sim Daeyun, for the whole world’s common interest, seeks to establish a new principle of coexistence which mediates individual desires and realizes common interests by the method of being true to the principles of one’s nature and the benevolent exercise of them to others(忠恕). As a result, he puts forth such a distinct argument on common interests that although humans naturally desire the gratification of one’s interests, one’s interests can only be realized by fulfilling others’ together. Sim Daeyun’s argument on common interest is an example of the diversity of the realm of ideas in late Chosŏn Dynasty when foreign thoughts, such as Western Learning, began to exert influences on the country. As Sim Daeyun himself said that his efforts to review Confucian values were for overcoming the world view of Catholicism, his philosophy has displayed Confucian intellectual’ reflections and inquiries in the 19th century to respond to that times’ questions.
