This study aims to analyse characteristics of Donggukyeojijido (Map of Korea) and Ilbonyeodo (Map of Japan) made by Yun Du-seo(1668-1715), a painter in the literary artist´s style of the late Joseon period, from his awareness as Korean people and recognition on neighboring countries based on extensive recognition of domestic and external geography. It has been thought that Yun Du-seo expanded his knowledge on his country and neighboring countries through collecting information on geography of East Asian countries such as Korea, Japan, and China, based on which he made maps on them. Yun Du-seo corrected defects of public maps of the early Joseon period such as Donggukjido by Jeong Chuk and Yang Seong-ji or added geographical information he wanted to know to make the Donggukyeojijido with true geography of Korea. A variety of geographical information was added to his real map-making through marking of the Mt. Baekdusan Delimitation Monument erected in 1712, comprehensive expansion of information on islands of the west and south coast and military bases, application of the geographical names renamed in the late 17th century, and use of sub-classified paradigms using signs and shapes. It indicates a search for Korean geography which began with self-awareness as a Korean. The particular fact in his view of the territory was that he marked Mt. Baekdusan Delimitation Monument erected in 1712 and Goryeo Delimitation Monument erected by Yun Gwan at Sunchunryong in Goryeo Period together in his map. It reflected his deep interest in the north which changed after delimitation of Mt. Baekdu and the territory of ancient nations. It has been assumed that the map was made between 1712 and 1715 based on the marking of Mt. Baekdusan Delimitation Monument in his map. Ilbon yeodo was made through deep interest in national defense as a valuable case to give information on recognition of neighboring countries of Korean intellectuals of the 18th century as ‘others’. Yun Du-seo bought the Sinpanilbondodehoedo (New Edition of Japanese Map) published in about 1686, based on which he corrected his knowledge on geographical information. As it is guessed that he bought it in 1712 when a korean Envoys returned home, it has been assumed that it was transcribed between 1712 and 1715. Yun Du-seo’s two maps had a great influence on geographical recognition of Jeong Yak-yong, his grandson and Yun Jeong-ki, Jeong Yak-yong’s grandson, learned Japanese geography while copying the Map of Japan. Yun Du-seo’s Donggukyeojijido and Ilbonyeodo occupy important positions in the map history of the late Joseon period, and meet key words of reality and actuality, important factors of his artistic mind.
