This study examined the relationship between daily stress experienced by college students and problem drinking with a particular focus on the role of negative affect such as depression and anxiety and maladaptive coping strategy as mediators. College students attending a university in Daejeon were recruited using a convenient sampling method and a total of 289 students participated in the study. Multiple regression and hierarchical regression analyses suggested by Baron and Kenny(1986) were employed to examine the relationship and the mediating effects of key variables. The Sobel Test was used to assess statistical significance of the mediating effect. The result showed that daily stress was significantly related to problem drinking of college students and that it had both direct and indirect effects on problem drinking only via maladaptive coping strategy. Negative affect such as depression and anxiety did not have any significant associations with problem drinking of college students and were found to have no mediating effect in the stress-problem drinking relationship. On the other hand, students’ maladaptive coping strategy partially mediated the relationship between daily stress and problem drinking in that the stress increased the likelihood of students using unhealthy coping strategies which in turn exacerbated problem drinking. Suggestions for future research and implications for social work practice were also discussed.
