This study examines whether managers beat analysts' earnings forecasts and if they do, how they beat them under the Korean capital market context. The focus is given to the analysis of quarterly earnings associated with earnings and/or expectation management by corporate managers to achieve such purposes. Korean Accounting Standards required firms to release quarterly financial reports from 2000 on a mandatory basis, which provided a momentum for market participants to recognize the importance of the quarterly financial reports, leading to enhanced concerns about their informativeness and value relevance. The relative paucity of researches on management behaviors attempting to beat analysts' forecasts by means of expectation management also motivated this study. The recent high interests on quarterly financial reporting being taken into account, it seems warranted to launch an in-depth examination of whether managers in Korea are disposed to undertake management of quarterly earnings as well as analysts' expectations of such earnings.
The results of this study are summarized as follows. The managers of listed companies in Korean capital market are more likely to beat analysts' earnings forecasts in earlier quarters rather than in later quarters. Profit-firms tend to beat analysts' forecasts more frequently than loss counterparts. With regard to the means of beating analysts' expectations, managers appear not only to manage earnings upward but also to manage earnings guidance/expectations downward. In sum, Korean managers are, on average, observed to rely on both means of earnings management and expectation management for the purpose of beating analyst's earnings forecasts. These findings are, to our knowledge, providing distinctive contribution to the extant literature in Korean business academia.
