This paper is intended to compare Choe Han-Gi's philosophy with Neo-Confucian thoughts, which had been the main stream of thoughts till the late Choson dynasty. According to the precedent studies, Choe Han-Gi's philosophy was regarded as overcoming Neo-Confucian thoughts. However I would pay attention to the structural similarity between two thoughts. So I scrutinize two aspects of Gi(氣) in Choe Han-Gi's philosophy. Choe Han-Gi divided Gi(氣) into Shin-Gi(神氣) and Hyong-Jil(形質) or Unhwa-Gi(運化氣) and Hyongchei-Gi(形體氣). He called Shin-Gi or Unhwa-Gi as Bonyonjisong(本然之性), and called Hyong-Jil or Hyongchei-Gi as Gijiljisong(氣質之性). I think his critical meditation about such Neo-Confucian concepts as Bonyonjisong and Gijiljisong resulted in his definition of Gi. Also Choe Han-Gi critically accepted Neo-Confucian doctrine of Gungli(窮理), and annexed it ti his doctrine of Chucheuk(推測). With regard to ethical issues, he contended good and evil was ex post facto determined according to empirical Chucheuk. In this, he show his philosophical simirarity with Neo-Confucian thoughts, because he explained good and evil accoding to such Neo-Confucian concepts as InUiYeiJi(仁義禮智), Cheukeun(惻隱) and Suo(羞惡). In result, I conculded Choe Han-Gi critically and limitedly accepted Neo-Confucian thoughts of the late Choson dynasty.
