This study is to look into the satirical techniques and objects embodied in the poems and lyrics of the enlightenment period of the modern age. The techniques used in the lyrics of the enlightenment period of the modern age were developed in a way of cultural struggles to restore the national sovereign under the semi-colony of the people. The satires in the enlightenment poems and lyrics based on journalism in the modern public area are mainly fact descriptions based on coolheaded reality-recognition rather than exaggeration or fiction which appeared in common satirical literature.
Objects of the satire are largely divided into the humans of the feudal age which was an obstacle to the formation of the modern nation-state and the invaders of Japanese imperialists and their assistants. The former includes the power-holders of the feudal dynasty, unskilled enlightened people and corrupt upper-class officials. On the other hand, the latter includes the power-holders of Japanese imperialism, traitors who sold the national power and Japan-friendly people. The intensity of satire becomes severer and more destructive in the latter rather than in the former.
Looking at the satirical methods used in the enlightenment lyrics in terms of pronunciation and intonation showed the following. First, the outspoken critical method by the direct pronunciation of the satirical subject was a low level viewed from the extent of aesthetical completion. Second, there was a method unfolding various imaginations by means of indirect pronunciation through the setting of fictitious speakers. Third, there existed a technique of expanding the common sympathy of the public through the transfiguration of the traditional genre.
Likewise, looking into the satiric significance of the enlightenment lyrics in the literary history found that the satire was a mediative product with the traditional genre rather than a foreign literary phenomenon, that the satirical lyrics were developed on the horizon of national literary perspective and that it showed realistic accomplishments which is rae in the history of Korean poems and lyrics.
