This study examined the necessity and significance of local culture education in the category of Korean cultural education, and above all examined the effects and utilization of local culture education when educating foreign students based on the Gangneung Danoje Festival.
First, this study determined the goal of the education and the needs of learners by conducting a survey of foreign students, who are learners, and then investigating the culture which was interested in byl earners and the necessity of culture education for learners. The survey result showed that most of the learners claimed the necessity of local culture education. Next, the Gangneung Danoje Festival was selected among the cultures of Gangneung area and this study presented a teaching-learning scheme that can utilize in Korean cultural education.
The purpose of this class was set by utilizing the Korean language education curriculum and the International currency Korean educational standard model, and the class was organized, focusing on the cultural education contents of Gangneung Danoje Festival. The course and procedure of learning culture experience were presented, which is based on for designed the class. As the evaluation tool of the class, self-evaluation and survey were conducted to derive the contents and effects.
This class consisted of a total of 3 classes, 1st cultural-knowledge learning, 2nd cultural-practice learning, and 3rd cultural-perspective learning. In this class, the learning of linguistic knowledge was also done with the aim of enhancing language ability, not just learning only about the cultural experience.
In the first class, learners experienced local culture, which is found that they have a curiosity about its meaning and contents. In the Second class, the learners conducted cultural experiences and wrote impressions of them, which is shown the learners were interested in experiencing them directly. Finally, in the third class, it is found a significance that the learners were educated not only on the culture of their own country but also on the culture of Korea and other countries.
The results, which revealed after classes through self-evaluation, were found that the high evaluations were received in the area of language activity, cultural activity, and attitude. Next, the significance of this class was found that the learners learned Korean easily and also responded that they could have an interest in the survey.
