Purpose: The purpose of this study was to provide basic data to caregivers who work in elderly care facilities to develop first-aid education programs for caregivers of elderly care facilities by identifying emergency situations, first-aid knowledge and confidence in performing care.
Method: This study was conducted after obtaining approval from the Bioethics Committee of G University at J.City. 12 elderly care facilities registered with the National Health Insurance Corporation's long-term care institution (as of October 1, 2020) were conveniently located in Gyeongsangnam-do to explain the purpose of the study to the head of the elderly care facilities, obtain permission, and visit the elderly care facilities to explain the purpose of the study, method, consent, and anonymity. 300 copies of the answers were used in the study. Research tools used emergency situations, first-aid, first-aid knowledge and first-aid confidence developed by researchers. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program.
Result: In this study, one person experienced an average of 8.66±3.72 emergencies per year, with 220 people(73.3%) suffering from hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. The largest number of first-aid patients(88.0%) were identified directly by caregivers at elderly care facilities, and 244 (81.3%) were using automatic defibrillators. The average knowledge of first-aid caregivers for elderly care facilities was 3.22±0.76 out of 5 points, a minimum of 2.64±0.99 points to a maximum of 3.60±0.97 points, and a maximum of 3.49 points from 2.58±0.94. The first-aid knowledge according to the general characteristics and education-related characteristics of caregivers in elderly care facilities for the elderly is final education (F=9.45, p=.000), a total career(F=4.55, p=.011), current agency experience (F=11.40, p=.000), Number of first-aid training sessions (F=7.63, p=.001), degree of first-aid training (F=6.61, p=.002). There were significant differences according to If you look at the relationship between first-aid knowledge and confidence in the caregivers at elderly care facilities, the total .933(p=.000) had a high static correlation between first-aid knowledge and confidence in performing.
Conclusion: As a result of this study, caregivers at elderly care facilities experienced both emergency situations directly and indirectly, and were performing all first-aid at the site directly. The average caregivers first-aid knowledge for elderly care facilities is 3.22±0.76 out of 5 points, with significant differences in final education, total experience, current institutional experience, number of first-aid education, and confidence in first-aid education. The knowledge of first-aid treatment and confidence in caregivers at elderly care facilities showed a high correlation.
