The purpose of this study is to understand the difference in view of accepting the Buddha's teachings through the conflict between Mahakassapa and Ananda. The reason for choosing Mahakassapa and Ananda was that they had particularly great influences over the entire Buddhist history.
This paper is organized as follows.
In Chapter 2, the characteristics of the two were described. In order to analyze the conflict between Mahakassapa and Ananda, it was necessary to examine the characters first.
In Chapter 3, the conflict between Mahakassapa and Ananda was divided into three phases: the time of the Buddha's being, the Buddha's apocalypse, and the first gathering.
In Chapter 4, the status of the activities after the completion of the first gathering and the influence of the two people.
Through these studies, this paper has drawn the following conclusions.
There were two main reasons for the conflict that existed between the two. It is a matter of origin and disposition of the two. Mahakassapa is from Brahmana and conservative. On the other hand, Ananda is from the Shakya family and progressive.
Also there were four major conflicts on specific issues.
The first, it was the issue of allowing women to enter into Buddhist order. The second, the issue of unconfirmed about what the minor precepts are. The third, the issue of not asking Buddha to postpone his death. And the fourth, the issue of Ananda's qualification to attend gathering.
Eventually, through this study, it was found that Mahakassapa and Ananda had much greater conflicts than known to us. However, it was discovered that they had good relationship at first, but later became hostile.
I look forward to continuing research in this area by Intelligent people.
