This study aims to provide a platform for job-seeking immigrant married women living in Jeju, to improve their job performance and gain economic independence through employment by designing Koran language program for occupational purposes.
As the history of immigrant married women grows longer, the number of immigrant married women participating in economic activities is increasing based on their Korean language proficiency and a good understanding of Korean society. On the contrary, the number of immigrant married women, who are forced to participate in economic activities without fluent Korean skill, is also increasing. They work to help themselves or their families back home financially.
In particular, immigrant married women in their early stages of the settlement are suffering from difficulties in the Korean language as well as lack of understanding of Korean society, which makes them difficult to find jobs or to carry out their duties. The need for occupational purpose Korean language education is growing for them.
In this study, immigrant married women were classified as Korean language learners for occupational purposes. The following studies were conducted to design the occupational purpose Korean language program to improve their job performance through education, and to help economic independence through employment.
Chapter 1 identifies the purpose and necessity of occupational purpose Korean language program for immigrant married women, and reviews previous studies on general Korean language program and occupational purpose program for immigrant married women.
Chapter 2 outlines the concepts of special-purpose Korean and specific-purpose Korean and divides the current status of immigrant married women into general status and Korean language education status.
In Chapter 3, before designing occupational purpose Korean language program, a survey was conducted on immigrant married women in Jeju.
In Chapter 4, there were two immigrant married women selected from the survey for in-depth interviews. In addition to the demands of the employed, interviews were also conducted with employers and other decision-makers to identify their opinion on hiring them.
Interviews were conducted with six HR managers from a total of five different occupations such as hotel room cleaning, which is an easy job for immigrant married women in Jeju, factories, agricultural sectors etc., including office and service jobs, which accounted for a high percentage of the desired employment types among immigrant married women.
In Chapter 5, the Korean language program was designed for immigrant married women, reflecting the results of surveys and interviews. The program consists mainly of speaking and listening, focusing on language fluency and pronunciation accuracy. This program aimed to enhance the professionalism of immigrant married women and to improve their job performance through learning vocabulary and Korean expressions required for various situations that they can go through in the workplace.
Finally, in Chapter 6, a comprehensive study on Korean language program for occupational purpose was presented for immigrant married women, revealing the significance and limitations of the study, and concluding with suggestions for further studies.
