In 2000, the number of church members began to decline. On the other hand, the number of pastors and churches has increased. Ministers value their livelihoods and duties. However, this disproportionate growth has prevented some Korean churches from resolving problems in pastoral living and job relations. This environmental change led to the Bivocational Ministry.
Korean churches have traditionally banned Bivocational Ministry. However, because the Korean church did not realistically solve the problems of pastors, it was impossible to overlook the bivocational ministry. As a result, the 'living type' double job to help the pastor's livelihood and the 'hope' double job to help the pastor's job. This is in the form of helping one another in the livelihood and duties of the pastor.
Pastoral work is here formed through the church. The Korean church is divided into three systems: supervision, elders, and congregation. Thus, pastoral work is represented by professionalism, unity and diversity. In addition, by placing the pastor's home on an extension of the church, the pastor's job leads to the pastor's livelihood. Therefore, for pastors, livelihood and work are not separate.
Luther's priesthood breaks the line between pastors and laymen. Therefore, just as every layman can be a pastor, every minister is a layman. The minister is therefore responsible as a layman. Bonhoeffer's secularized theology breaks down the line between religion and unbelief. This is because unbelief is the closest to God, and in secularization there is persuasion beyond religious limits.
Therefore, the pastor should be able to explain in lay life and secularization. Just as there are various lay people, pastors are diverse. Also, the more you know about secularization, the more various the ministry is possible. Thus, when a pastor is a layman and professional in a variety of fields, different pastors are available.
The bivocational ministry in the Korean church today is a response to environmental change, an extension of the pastor, and the possibility of various pastors. Therefore, pastors need to be engaged in a variety of circumstances as laymen. When pastors have a variety of expertise, they can effectively reveal the life of Christ.
