The spoken word is an external expression of inner thoughts that are not yet fully concrete. In other words, speech is a unique instrument of human expression regarding their inner worlds. This study explains that speech is not merely an instrument of communication but is actually a form of spiritual expression through language. Speaking without inner reflection causes distractions to others and to the self. This also means that silence can aid in experiencing inner maturity and expanding the inner world.
There are so many cases regarding the discipline of silence in Christianity. Spiritual figures have practiced the silence as a requirement of their spiritual lives. They also practiced it to be united with God's will. Thus, it has been proven to help break free from inner thoughts and focus on a spiritual desire for God. However, the modern lifestyle is to never practice silence. So, this research analyzes both the positive aspects of the discipline of silence and the difficulties accompanied with that for modern people.
As a complement to the traditional discipline of silence, this study also suggests the discipline of reticence and analyzes how it would be helpful as a spiritual discipline for the present age. It suggests that reticence has some spiritual benefits in three aspects, at least for modern Christians. First, it is easier to practice within their context of their lives, since they can talk while practicing it. Second, they can practice it without breaking any of their daily routines by taking a spiritual retreat. Third, it promotes attentive listening to others. As a result, they may discern what is good or evil in others and live a life united with God's will in this distracted world.
