Osuyu-tang is the first recorded in Shanghanlun and consists of Evodia Fructus, Ginseng Radix, Zingiberis Rhizoma, and Jujubae Fructus. The effects of Osuyu-tang include 'retch after eating', 'vomiting and diarrhea', 'frothing', 'feel burning like dying' and 'headache.'
Many of the Chinese herbal medicine, including Osuyu-tang, have historically been verified for clinical validity and stability as treatments of Oriental traditional medicine, but there has not been sufficient research on the operating of mechanism of the treatment or the identity. Thus, it was necessary to re-examine the clinical meaning on the treatment by review the contents of clinical and experimental studies, and to review the consistency with the old texts.
As of July 4, 2019, the present study looked up 31 papers related to Osuyutang in RISS, Naver, KISS, PUBMED, Science Direct. A total of 27 papers were selected for analysis, except for 4 papers that are not directly related to Osuyu-tang and that cannot be verified. Among them, there were 7 domestic and 20 international papers.
The 9 clinical research papers could be classified into 4 chronic headaches, 2 digestive problems and 3 skin diseases by subject. The 18 experimental papers could be classified into 8 cases of animal experimentation with chronic headache, 2 cases of component analysis conditions, 4 cases of quantitative analysis of metabolism and absorption, and 4 cases of other gastrointestinal, sedative, antioxidant effects.
After analyzing 27 papers on Osuyu-tang, we found that clinical studies on chronic headaches, digestive disorders and dermatological diseases were carried out, and that experimental studies on the migraine animal models, component analysis, and effect on the gastrointestinal and central nervous system were carried out.
