The practice in the four bases of mindfulness (四念處, catvāri smṛty-upasthānāni) is one of the most important practices in Buddhism. Among the four bases of mindfulness, the mindfulness of dharma (法念處, dharma-smṛty-upasthāna) can be regarded to comprehend and represent each of the bases of mindfulness so that the four bases of mindfulness might be covered by the mindfulness of dharma. The mindfulness of dharma is a practice for eliminating the wrong idea that selflessness is none other than self. The human suffering comes from the idea that I exist. Through the practice in the mindfulness of dharma, we realize that the present situation exists not by the nature of the original 'self' but by conditioned arising. It is the practice of changing human behavior through the correction of wrong conceptions, ideas, and concepts. Through such a change of behavior, a person's life becomes free and affluent, and furthermore, the attention previously directed toward oneself is now turned to other beings. The ultimate goal of this practice is to embody the four immeasurable states of mind and the six perfections in daily life. It purifies individuals, a society, the world, and the whole realm of dharma. The meaning implied in the dharma is really wide and large.
This thesis presents a meditation program that can be easily and quickly applied in daily life to modern people, by analyzing the characteristics of the mindfulness of dharma described in the scriptures, with regard to the above traits. It is hoped that the practice in the mindfulness of dharma, although presented here as a preliminary example, will be widely applied in daily life and that the analysis of its characteristics will be widely utilized.
