Visuddhimagga explains that the breathing practice of inhaling and exhaling will not only make one's mind calm and happy but also instantly make negative thoughts or emotions disappear and subdued whenever they occur and even cultivate the ability to cut off distracting thoughts. Based on this, the author has conducted this study by adopting the breathing using one's body as the meditation instrument.
When counselors counsel clients, altruistic role is emphasized and they are the most important instrument. In regards to the stress experienced by these counselors on the job, they appear in seven factors. For examining the effects of mindfulness breathing on counselor's job stress, 34 research subjects comprised of Pabbajja and graduate students were assigned to experimental group and control group with 17 people respectively to conduct MBSR's Body Scan and mindfulness breathing program for each session during 8-week period, which was followed by survey before and after the meditation. Limitations were placed with five factors consisting of "social expectation of counselor, inappropriate treatment, difficult client, counselling skill deficiency and excessive work" by excluding the work environment unsuitable for the research participants and relationship within organization factors.
In the case of experimental group that performed mindfulness breathing, it was found that job stress awareness level was statistically lowered after their meditation in the job stress factors of social expectation of counselor, difficult client, counselling skill deficiency and excessive work excluding inappropriate treatment. In the case of control group that did not perform mindfulness breathing, on the other hand, it was found that a statistically significant difference was not been shown during the same period in all five factors of job stress.
The significance of this study is in the sense that it has presented the fact mindfulness breathing can be one of alternatives for alleviating the stress felt by counselors during their job. Considering the research results, mindfulness breathing is more effective in alleviating the job stress caused from the psychological aspect instead of the economic aspect and it is also effective in reducing counselor's job stress. It is the author's opinion that mindfulness breathing will be an opportunity for counselor to provide good results in the effectiveness of counselling by being able to effectively cope of various situations they experience as counsellors by recognizing their mind through mindfulness breathing.
