The public street facilities are getting rapid growth with the urban expansion, and gradually emphasized as the city element by governments and citizens. These public facilities constitute the essential components of cities with its particular status between human and environment. Nowadays, life of people increased and existence ability increased. Thus, temporary demand for design by the people to be restricted in act due to age or trouble is increasing with surprising speed.
Universal design to aim the dimension to consider majority users who are not minority in being introduced as new design for realizing the environment of welfare society. This universal design in the creative paradigm of the 21st century which may realize the dignity and equality of human beings.
However, there are many cases that universal design principles are being excluded yet in real design course due to recognition lack of designers or economical inefficiency etc. So as to overcome these situations, generalization of concept of universal design and more systematized design course are necessary.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate application of universal design principles to public street facilities to provide data of universal design adaptation status in public street facilities can be used as basic reference to any studies of improving the public street environment.
The construction of this study is as below; In the first chapter, as an introduction, background and purpose of the study, method and scope of the study are described. And in the second chapter, as theoretical review, area and classification of universal design and public street facilities via literature will be discussed. In the third chapter, investigation on application of universal design principle to public street facilities. In the last chapter, summaries and conclusions will be deducted.
