This study was carried out to evaluate the accuracy of odor sensor which has been used in Korea and to estimate the feasibility of the real-time odor monitoring device as the odor management system
Total 9 odor sensor manufactured by 3 companies were used and the observed data from Jan. 2012 to Aug. 2013 were reviewed to check out the stability of operation, the relative measuring error and the relative standard deviation.
The results of this study are as follows ;
First, odor sensors has been operated stably for one and half years without any troubles or accidents. The operation rate in steady state was more than 95%.
Second, H₂S concentration at field was ranged from o ppb to 20ppb, and NH₃ from o ppb to 50 ppb, according to observed data by sensors which are installed at field.
Third, comparing the reference which are the analytical data by the instrumental device of the sensor data, the relative measuring error of odor sensor was 2 to 5.6 for H₂S and 4.14 to 4.92 for NH₃. In view of these results, it must be difficult for odor sensor to be used as the measuring device of odor concentration.
Finally, it was appeared that relative standard deviation(RSD) of sensors manufactured by Acen Co(Ltd.) was 2.09 for H₂S and 3.79 for NH₃. On the other hand, the RSD of Senko Co(Ltd.) and Kenbitech Co(Ltd.) were 6.04, 7.05 for H₂S and 5.38, 378 for NH₃ individually.
In conclusion, it was estimated that odor sensors can be used as a tool to handle odor problem which occurs in odor generation sources such as an industrial complexes, but has a limitation as the analytical device to measure odor concentration.
