This is a descriptive study on correlation to investigate influences of hair style of female university students upon self-esteem and satisfaction for physical body.
Data were collected from 225 students in the first and second grade in nursing college with three-year institutions in B city and J city in Gyeongsangnamdo - they also have never received education for self-esteem as of date of the study from April 1 ~ 8, 2013. Finally, 207 questionnaire sheets were used for analysis - incomplete questionnaire sheets were excluded.
Collected data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 program by frequency and percentage, average, standard deviation, calculation of maximum and minimum figure, t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Analysis of Variance.
The study results are as follows;
There were differences in self-esteem according to general characteristics, psychological satisfaction and satisfaction for physical body after change of hair style. Self-esteem was average 3.49 from full score 5.0 point, which is medium. Interest in hair was average 2.92 from full score 5.0 point, which is somewhat low. Satisfaction for physical body part was average 2.91 which is somewhat low than medium. Psychological satisfaction after change of hair style was average 3.69 which is medium. Social effectiveness amid psychological satisfaction after change of hair style was 3.54, whereas satisfaction and self-confidence was 3.75. This means that Psychological satisfaction for satisfaction and self-confidence was higher than social effectiveness.
Self-esteem showed significant differences according to health status and interrelation, satisfaction on major, and satisfaction on physical body. Psychological satisfaction after change of hair style based on general characteristics showed significant differences according to age, school grade, whether one has a religion or not, interrelation, satisfaction on major, satisfaction on physical body, monthly pocket money, and monthly expenditure for managing hair style.
Satisfaction after change of hair style according to general characteristics, psychological satisfaction showed significant differences according to school grade, whether one has a religion or not, interrelation, satisfaction on major, satisfaction on physical body, monthly pocket money, and monthly expenditure for managing hair style.
Psychological satisfaction of social effectiveness after change of hair style according to general characteristics showed significant differences according to age, school grade, whether one has a religion or not, interrelation, satisfaction on major, satisfaction on physical body, and monthly pocket money.
In conclusion, it can be known that hair style gives significant influences on self-esteem and physical, psychological satisfaction. Female university students enter the early period of adult. They would contact new life, have much social activities, their identity is established, and study hard for their major. So, hair style takes important position for self-esteem, physical, psychological satisfaction.
Accordingly, based on above results, it is thought that expert hair style managing skill is needed. In the beauty industry, differentiated and active marketing and efforts for them are required. And program about hair style managing skill should be developed and related education to effectively use the program is needed so that they can establish right self image and body image, and manage themselves on their own.
