The purpose of this study is to provide the measures to prevent and eradicate school violence and provide the basic data to resolve the conflicts between teachers and parents.
In order to solve such research questions, a questionnaire survey was conducted from elementary school teachers and parents in the Jeonnam Province.
A frequency analysis and a cross-analysis were conducted to compare the recognition between teacher group and parents group, targeting 201 teachers and 578 parents who replied to the questionnaire.
The main results and conclusion of this work are presented as follows:
How do they think of school violence?
First, teachers had more serious recognition on severity of school violence than teachers did. Regarding recognition on types of school violence, 31.2% of teachers and 47.5% of parents recognized bullying. Both teachers and parents recognized that bullying is the biggest type of school violence.
Second, regarding recognition on the causes of school violence, 53.2% of teachers and 39.1% of parents recognized trivial irritation. Regarding recognition on a place where school violence occur, both teachers and parents recognized that the place where school violence occurs highest is the inside of school.
Third, regarding recognition on the causes of school violence offenders, teachers recognized that the biggest cause is the personality problem of offenders, whereas parents recognized that it is the family trouble of offenders. Regarding recognition on the causes of school violence victims, both teachers and parents recognized that the biggest cause is the personality problem of victims.
And how do they think of violence prevention and eradication?
First, regarding recognition on the reasons that school violence fails to be prevented or eradicated, teachers recognized that the reasons are parents' lack of interest and effects of harmful media such as mass media and internet, whereas parents recognized that the reasons are parents' lack of interest and lack of education about school violence.
Second, regarding recognition on the necessity of school violence related program education and on participation into training, 85.1% of teachers and 57.4% of parents recognized that the education is needed, and 95.0% of teachers and 77.7% of parents actively, or if time permits, will participate into the training.
Third, regarding recognition on the activities to prevent trouble behaviors of school violence, teachers recognized that family education is needed, whereas parents recognized that operation of school violence prevention program and family education are needed.
Fourth, regarding recognition on the level of dealing with school violence by school and teachers at the time of school violence occurrence, 60.2% of teachers and 11.2% of parents replied that they deal with school violence very well. In the aspect, teachers recognized that they handle school violence well, whereas parents recognized that school and teacher do not handle it well.
Fifth, regarding recognition on the ways of punishing school violence offenders, teachers recognized that it should be done in accordance with school rules, whereas parents recognized that any promise to prevent reoccurrence and forgiveness are needed.
It was concluded that there were significant differences in recognition between teachers and parents. Therefore, teachers should understand parents' recognition on school violence, and thereby should make their best efforts to prevent and eradiate school violence and resolve the teacher-parent-conflicts caused by school violence.
