In this thesis, bearing in mind the connection between narrative structure and the reality of the times, I selected two works from the 1970's, "Wall of Rumor" and "The Small Ball the Dwarf Launched," to examine into their common and different points. Through this study, there was a chance to rethink the existing character through the publication of these two works by Literature and Intellect, a publishing company symbolic for its devotion to pure literature.
First, in Chapter II, an examination was made into the characteristic narrative structure, namely the frame story structure, which was adopted due to reality of the period. What the implementation of this dual structure did was to lower the understanding of the reader while effectively exposing the theme consciousness of the writer. Only there was a difference in the flow of story manifested through the frame story structure which in Cheong-jun Lee's "Wall of Rumor" the story flow was focused on the outside narrator, creating a narrative, while in Se-hee Cho's "The Small Ball the Dwarf Launched" the complex frame story structure obstructed the flow of story.
Second, repetitive narrative was a common area of narrative technique. First, the repetitive narration that was used in Cheong-jun Lee's "Wall of Rumor," showed a close relationship with the conjectures, adverbs, and connectors that were used in the story, which prolonged decision and endlessly doubts, mirroring the process of finding truth. In Se-hee Cho's "The Small Ball the Dwarf Launched," repetition generally exhibits extrinsic reality and makes the reader participate in this reality.
Third, among the techniques used to effectively convey the writer's consciousness, I noticed the predicates used for consciousness of time. In "Wall of Rumor" by Cheong-jun Lee, I determined there to be significant meaning in his method of perpetually continuing consciousness on one event by using mostly past progressive predicates. On the other hand, "The Small Ball the Dwarf Launched" by Se-hee Cho employs mostly past tense predicates which displays intermittence of consciousness and furthermore an awareness of a hopeless reality.
Linked with narrative structure, in Chapter III there was a close relationship also with the reality recognized by the author, and a closer investigation was conducted based on the consciousness of "death" and "alienation." An analysis was made on the various dimensions of "death" based on its being negative thought, a desperate place to flee from reality. "Alienation" exhibited multifaceted qualities in "Wall of Rumor," and "The Small Ball the Dwarf Launched" conveyed conflict of class, displaying a schematized aspect.
The two works both reflected reality, but the methods differed. Like so, despite reflecting reality, the fruition was narrative that surpassed typicality of the period, and Literature and Intellect which published the two pieces not only adhered to pure literature but also enforced a novel method of reverberation in their determination to reflect reality.
