Literature provides a person with a diverse experience and the content of thought. When reading a literary work, a person develops and matures. The goal of literary education is to develop the inner side of learners with abundant thought and feeling through literary experience.
However, it was difficult to enjoy the benefit and the pleasure of literature because the existing literary education adhered to an author or a text-centered reading approach. To overcome the problems, we must consider the theory of response centered literary education.
This study accepts the theory of Rosenblatt's reader-response and basic viewpoint of a response centered approach to change the direction of novel education. Therefore, arousing the learner's interest in novels and revitalizing their responses are emphasized in this study.
In order to successfully examine this learning model, we took a look at the most important notion concept of response. The new model of response centered literary education is designed based on the existing model of response centered literary education and the principle of it is suggested. The steps of this model are divided as three folds which consist of like pre-teaching, teaching, and post-teaching. Especially, during the teaching procedure, there are four step : preparation for response development, formation. clarification, and extension of response.
For response centered novel education, a novel is applied in a real class setting. At first, the objective of the lesson is established with the analysis of "Mr. Bang" , the novel written by Chae man sik. The content of "Mr. Bang" criticizes the generation and human character at that time by satirizing the process in which the character of "Bang sam bok" gains recognition as "Mr. Bang" , who rapidly adapts himself to a confusing society right after the independence of his country. Accordingly, it is valuable as the topic of response centered novel education because through the novel, leaners can think of a desirable human character living during that era. Also, the concrete methods of classes and activities are examined and the lesson plans for three classes are made based on the steps of a response centered novel education model.
In this study, it is suggested that leaners can relate to the novels on a more personal level through activities of expressing and sharing their responses after reading them. Also this study has its own significance which provides learners with the educational opportunities for accepting novel more comfortable.
