Mankind starts to deliver feeling and decide with body not with language. They start to awaken their feelings by watching the facial expressions and actions of others, and they start the exchanges of feelings by acting. That is, the physical actions and facial expressions can make others feel or communicate the state of the feeling without language. In other words, in the world of formative arts, the shape of a person or expressions of each part become the base of the communication as the original figure of the action coming from the feeling before the language.
This study focused on the expressing of symbolic social emotions and feelings by sculpture forming of human body with ceramic art, and it was made by the material characteristics of the clay to capture and conceptualize a moment of a man, which may be a person feeling the life with his whole body as he sits crouched on the front center of the hell mouth or the psychological anxiety of the citizens of Calais facing the moment of distinction.
The characteristics of ceramic expression contains the problem of how to make the necessary figure with appropriately selected ceramic material and to completely dry and calcine. The calcination is the core of ceramic expression, and the mood of the art piece depends on how to calcine.
When a huge hexahedron is formed or during the drying process after the forming, or in the calcination process, to prevent cracks, preparing the material by mixing the chamotte of the necessary amount is crucial in the forming and calcination. If chamotte is not mixed in the material used in this study, the shape of the hexahedron would have been failed by being twisted and collapsed during the calcination in high temperature.
The effect of reducing flames could have been achieved by plastering appropriate amount of iron oxide on the surface of the art piece after the biscuit firing and the calcination after wiping partially discretionally to give changes of light and shade.
The further study will start from various color formations of clay during the calcination, and experiment how various metallic oxides such as copper oxide, iron oxide, tin oxide, and manganese oxide, form colors in the cases of reducing flames, oxidizing flame, an neutral flame on the clay used in this study, to develop more various colors.
