That youth in similar environment adapt school differently made investigate the study. To examine protective factors that influence upon the children`s School Adjustment, the study determined subjects: firstly, whether family environment influences adaptation to school, secondly, whether individual differences influence adaptation to school, thirdly, what make youth in adversity maintain and motivate to adaptability to school. And thus the purpose of the study was to investigate protective factors that influence upon the poor children`s School Adjustment and to examine self-esteem, parental attachment, peer attachment, vocational maturity and income level upon the poor children`s School Adjustment.
In this study, data of second grade middle school student(fifth year, 2008) in KYPS first year(2004) ~ fifth year(2008) were used. Since it provided children`s School Adjustment, economical environment of family, children`s self-esteem, parental attachment, peer attachment, vocational maturity and income level. 2,190 cases were used for hierarchical regression analysis after excluding cases in 701 ten thousand won of monthly average family income level, to eliminate outlier effects.
This was to supply basic data to prevent school maladjustment and to remediate coping strategy. The study was aiming on suggest practical service by examining self-esteem, parental attachment, peer attachment, vocational maturity and income level upon the poor children`s School Adjustment. For that, the study adopted hypothesesas follows:
Firstly, does self-esteem influence upon children`s adaptability to school?
Secondly, does parental attachment influence upon children`s adaptability to school?
Thirdly, does peer attachment influence upon children`s adaptability to school?
Fourthly, does vocational maturity influence upon children`s adaptability to school?
Fifthly, does income level influence upon children`s adaptability to school?
The findings were as follows:
Firstly, self-esteem had positive correlation with children`s adaptability to school. As high self-esteem, as high adaptation to school and educational achievement.
Secondly, parental attachment had positive correlation with children`s adaptability to school. As high parental attachment, as high adaptation to school and educational achievement.
Thirdly, vocational maturity had positive correlation with children`s adaptability to school. As high vocational maturity, as high adaptation to school and educational achievement.
Fourthly, peer attachment had positive correlation with children`s adaptability to school. As high peer attachment, as high adaptation to school and educational achievement.
Fifthly, income level had positive correlation with children`s adaptability to school. But, it had relatively less influence upon adaptation to school and educational achievement.
In conclusion, in order of self-esteem, parental attachment, and vocational maturity influenced dependent variables of school adjustment and scholastic achievement. Development of program that enhance children`s self-esteem in school is required then. Secondly, we need to pay attention to parental attachment influencing children`s adaptation highly and clarify family intervention strategy for poor youth. In other words, balanced and stabilized attachment between family and children help children`s School Adjustment. Thirdly, the study has meaning in examining vocational maturity that influences children`s adaptation despite rare precedent research. The study verified vocational maturity factor influences children`s adaptation rather than peer attachment or level income. It backed precedent research highlighting importance of vocational maturity up. Fourthly, this study has significant in analyzing adaptation to school based on positive factors regardless of economical level. This study provided theoretical implications that level income is not necessarily influence children`s School Adjustment, unlike precedent research for examining negative correlation between level income and adaptation to school. Lastly, this study examined effects of three positive factors - self-esteem, parental attachment, and vocational maturity - helping children`s School Adjustment. The study has a practical implication on development of educational welfare program to enhance children`s self-esteem, parental attachment, and vocational maturity is useful.
