Quotation has an explicit function of communication. Since both quoted contents and quoted form are important, quotation constructions are essential parts to be dealt with in grammar education. However, many people use quotation constructions incorrectly in practical speaking and/or writing situations.
The objectives of this thesis are to analyze reasons for wrong use of quotation constructions and present the quality of education for quotation constructions which is suitable for high school students.
This thesis includes a fair criticism on educational contents for quotation constructions which are inattentively treated in Korean language curriculum. The criticism is based on the followings.
First, the results of a questionnaire that includes the answers from high school students are analyzed. Also, quotation constructions that were written in the composition of undergraduate students and reporters are presented as a basis. Besides, the characteristics of quotation constructions that were written in newspapers are analyzed.
On the basis of the problems that emerge from the analyzed results, the necessity for complement of grammar education for quotation constructions and some countermeasures are presented.
Above all, this paper indicates the problem that the name of quoted paragraph which is used in current school grammar is inadequate. Then, the necessity for contents presentation for the importance of quotation constructions is proposed.
The structures of direct and indirect quotation constructions that are two basic types of quotation constructions are presented. In addition, this paper treats an expression of a shortened word which is generally used in colloquial language.
