In the modern ceramic art the type of coexistence of the oil shape and texture on the surface of the pottery, shape or structure and abstract elements by using clay is used. Also, from the selection of the clay till the end of the glaze firing the modern art has been developing into the ceramic art giving creative meaning in its overall production process. While use of the color is getting more and more diversified as the ceramic art pursues the diversity as it develops, rather dull colors within limited range have been used in Korea. To see the historical background of Korean ceramic art the use of metallic oxide has been extremely limited until the modern ceramic art.
As more variety of colors are being used in Korea as well thesedays, I developed low-color color clay by selecting a part of Terra Sigillate technique.
Based on the theoretical foundation and experiment I could get the following result.
Firstly, I could get diverse kinds of color clay after using all kinds of paints into the low-color white clay. Unlike normal color clay effect the color clay developed in this experiment could shine with its own shimmering effect giving vibrance on the surface texture without using glaze.
Secondly, if diverse kinds of paints are added into the low-color white clay any kinds of color expression was possible. Because the color clay remains its own color although the melting-point is different the plasticity range was wide.
Thirdly, because various techniques are applied on the surface of the overall ceramics using an equipment to get the decoration effect with low-color color clay, more than two kinds of texture expression and color comparison was possible.
Forthly, without considering the painting technique of the low-color color clay, it has the merit of not influencing on the result.
In other words, because the original color was not discharged although bright color was painted on the dark color the original color could be expressed in a number of ways.
Fifthly, I could get two kinds of color effect by painting the color clay on the high-color plasticity glaze. In case of coloring the color clay on the glaze, the glass texture of the glaze and the mat feeling of the color clay cold be expressed at the same time.
Based on this study, I tried to enlarge the range of color use in the modern ceramic art in Korea and find out the new working direction to get along with the global trend.
