This study was performed to broaden the content range of school physical education in middle school physical education classes through implementing new sports.
In order to achieve this goal, the researcher myself instructed chouck ball, tee ball and soft volleyball to 67 students at Heemang middle school during the first semester of 2007.
The results of the study were analyzed through the primary data: diary and observation of the students and teacher, which were obtained from the teaching, and supplementary data such as a questionnaire, teacher as researcher professional development activities, participating in workshops and observation of experts.
The class goals of 'The Class Everyone Participates in Together', 'Understanding New Sports and General Sports' and 'Experiencing Various Activities in Physical Education Class' were achieved in the process as the students experienced new sports, mixed together, gained understanding of one another and worked together through chouck ball, tee ball, and soft volleyball classes.
It is inferred that such goal accomplishment was possible due to the easy learning and safe aids together with flexible rules of the new sports, and a lot of characteristics similar to existing sports.
The students easily approached the new sports with interests, and they experienced favorable reactions while participating and exercising without any pressure.
However, the areas requiring further discussion were also noted such as the issues relating to mixed classes, limited circumstances, and continued new sports learning of the teacher.
The conclusions drawn from these results are as follows:
First, implementation process of new sports in middle school physical education classes can be summarized as sports selection, class preparation, organizing teaching syllabus and performance and evaluation of the class.
Second, reactions from the teacher and students toward new sports were very positive a result related to the characteristics such as novelty, safety, simplicity, flexibility and similarity of new sports functioned well.
Third, in order to implement new sports efficiently, it appeared that securing adequate class hours, organizing teaching syllabus, which fits characteristics of learners and class goal, and preparing various teaching methods and activity tasks are important.
