Korean students learn and study English with the English text books in most classes. So the importance of English education in Korea, it is necessary to investigate the English textbooks most Korean students use to see whether the collocations used in the textbooks are in accordance with those of the native speakers.
Having regarded verbs, nouns, adjectives as most important core vocabulary items that constitute the major elements of English sentences, the collocations of English verbs, nouns, adjectives have been investigated in this study.
In chapter 2, the features of corpus, corpus linguistics have been treated. Corpus is defined as an abundant language resource in electronic form in order to be used as a sample of the language study.
In chapter 3, the feature of collocation has been treated. Collocation is defined as a group of words which occur together repeatly in a language.
In chapter 4, the 15 English testbooks in the middle school produced by 5 publishing companies have been chosen for this study. The analysis of testbooks was implemented by Concordance. The frequency of the verbs, nouns, adjectives have been calculated and each 10 words have been selected. The collocations and the examples of the words have been investigated.
In conclusion, understanding and competence of collocation are crucial in language learning. It is effective and meaningful in providing students with authentic text.
