‘길>질’, ‘기름>지름’ 등의 변화는 조음적 원인과 더불어 인지적 요인이 2차적으로 작용하여 나타난 현상으로 보고자 한다. 일반적인 조음 동화는 보편적으로 일어나는 현상인 데 대하여 이 예들은 그 발생 환경이 제1 음절에 국한되어 있고 다른 종류의 구개음화에 비해 그 분포도 매우 제한되어 있기 때문이다. 인지적 측면에서 볼 때, 전설고모음 ‘ㅣ’ 앞의 ‘ㄱ’은 ‘ㅈ’과 음향적으로 유사해서 ‘ㅈ’으로 인지적 혼동을 일으키기 쉬우므로 ‘ㅈ’으로 오인한 결과 특정 환경에서 ‘길>질’ 등의 구개음화가 발생한 것으로 설명하였다.

‘디새>기와’, ‘딤$$>김치’, ‘맛디->맡기-’ 등의 예는 ‘ㄷ>ㅈ>ㄱ’과 같은 단계적 변화로 볼 수 있는데, 이 경우에는 차례로 ㄷ 구개음화 및 ㄱ 구개음화의 과도교정을 경험한 것으로 보아 왔다. 그러나 과도교정의 목표 대상과 과정이 명확하지 않으므로 이 글에서는 ‘지>기’ 변화의 원인을 음향적 유사성을 토대로 한 청자의 음운화 과정에서 빚어진 인지 작용의 우연성에 두었다.

This paper was aimed to elucidate a velar palatalization in Korean. This phonological phenomenon was generally accepted to be a pure articulatory assimilation. However I would like to insist that this sound shift was not a articulatory assimilation but a phonologization based on the misperception by a hearer. Perception in addition to coarticulation played a role in the sound change of velar palatalization whereby velars shift to alveopalatals in the context of high close vowels. The perceptional experiments of Guion(1998) demonstrated that there was a significant bias towards misperceiving velars as alveopalatals in these contexts.

On the building of this findings We suggested that this velar palatalization of Korean conformed to the typology of CHANGE which Blevins(2004) asserted as a factor motivating sound changes. On the other hand, there was also another type which emerged as the opposit direction shifting from /c/ to /k/. It had traditionally been claimed to be a false regression or hypercorrec- tion. In this paper We claimed it could appropriately be described as a change typology like CHANCE and CHOICE following the CCC-model of Blevins(2004) also.
