 Ministry of the Environment has carried out a nationwide survey on natural environments of uninhabitable islands since 1998 based on the Special Act on Preservation of the Ecosystems in Island Areas including Dokdo to inform and preserve the excellent island ecosystems. Islands designated for conservation are the islands where no human resides or humans reside only in limited area and have excellent natural scenery and ecosystems. As of November, 2016, total 230 islands are designated and managed. I constructed actual vegetation maps of 229 islands except Dokdo among islands designated for conservation and collected information on species composition of vegetation. Further, I prepared basic ecological information for effective management by synthesizing those results. As a result, the number of plant communities established in the islands was shown in 153. They are composed of 21 evergreen broad-leaved forests, 16 coniferous forests, 44 deciduous broad-leaved forests, 24 shrub dominated vegetation, 46 herbaceous plant dominant vegetation, and 2 plantation. Islands designated for conservation showed a tendency that the larger the island, the more number of plant communities and species, and thereby reflected principle of island biogeography. On the other hand, although the number of plant communities and species showed a tendency to decrease as the distance from the land farther, the trend was not significant because the specific islands were usually designated among areas with excellent natural ecosystems rather than designated randomly. The number of exotic plant species showed a tendency to increase as the island area increased and the distance from land become closer. From this result, management through proper prevention of anthropogenic disturbances such as grazing, development, fisheries, and institutional preservation plans are required to conserve the island. In particular, islands that are connected to the land during low tides and thereby people visit frequently need special management against habitat destruction by disturbing activities, plant gathering, and alien species invasions. Islands designated for conservation are small isolated ecosystems that are likely to be disturbed or damaged by even small anthropogenic disturbances interferences and once they have been damaged, they can be hardly restored into the original states. I prepared a management plan, which manages them by classifying into three types: A, B and C types in order to manage islands designated for conservation systematically and effectively. In order to improve the management system, differentiated management plans such as restriction on entrance and activity, detailed surveys and monitoring based on the criteria for management by type classified through this study.
