본 연구에서는 영하 163 도의 극저온 환경에서 가동되는 액화천연가스운반선 방열시스템 금속계 일차방벽 및 단열패널을 구성하고 있는 비금속계 저온용 소재(오스테나이트계 스테인리스 강, 알루미늄 합금, 플라이우드)에 대한 극저온 시험을 수행하여 온도 및 변형률속도에 의존한 재료의 기계적 거동에 대해 조사하였으며, LNG 운송을 담당하는 오스테이트계 스테인리스 강으로 제작된 LNG 파이프의 모재부, 열영향부, 용착금속부의 극저온 충격시험을 수행하여 안전성을 검토하였다. 이는 극저온 환경에서 적용되는 소재의 경우 상온에서와는 달리 급격히 취성화되고, 일부 소재의 경우 비선형 경화현상이 발생한다고 알려져 있기 때문에 극저온 환경에서 적용되는 소재를 이해하고 설계에 반영하는 것이 설계 단계에서 매우 중요하기 때문이다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 재료의 극저온 소재의 능력을 파악하고, 안전하고 적절한 적용성을 도모하며, 산업현장에서의 재료 사용에 있어 정량적 지표로 활용되는 것에 초점을 둔 연구를 수행하였다. 아울러, 알루미늄 합금에 비해 상대적으로 우수하고, 저온 영역에서 이차경화와 같은 비선형성을 보이는 오스테나이트계 스테인리스 강에 대한 이론적 연구를 수행하여 재료의 파단 및 비선형 거동을 예측할 수 있는 점소성-손상모델을 제안하였다. 개발 점소성-손상모델은 상용유한요소해석 프로그램 ABAQUS 사용자지정 재료 서브루틴에 탑재하여 수치적으로 계산하였으며, 재료시험 결과와 비교하여 그 유효성을 검증하였다. 최종적으로, 제안모델 및 개발 서브루틴의 구조적용 가능성에 대해 검토하기 위해 Mark-Ⅲ 타입 LNG 멤브레인 구조시험편의구조실험, 그리고 개발 서브루틴을 활용한 전산해석을 수행하였다.
