STEAM education is an acronym of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics, referring to the integrative method of education among the above academic courses. The purpose of STEAM is helping students develop skills to define and solve problems on their own, and ultimately nurturing creative, integrated talents by cultivating the ability to think in complex ways on a given problem and problem solving skills students can apply to everyday life.
This research applied STEAM to the activity of music appreciation in music curriculums, with the main purpose of exploring action plans. Prior to class design, therefore, the study attempted to apply the components of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and arts to explore action plans to activity-centered, as opposed to the past cramming and rote-learning centered, music appreciation class techniques. Specifics on the study are as the followings.
In order to apply STEAM education to appreciation education, the research starts by an eclectic review of previous studies and literature, summarizing and presenting the conceptualization and details of STEAM education. It then divides stages of appreciation classes into four levels and drafts class designs suitable for each stage: sensuous reception, analysis and exploration, sensing expressive skills, and understanding and creative interpretation. Class format centered on small group cooperative learning, and gave tasks related to appreciation activities that encouraged students to apply components of mathematics, technology, engineering and arts in exploring ways to solve problems presented to them.
This study is expected to yield the following effects.
1) By grafting S, T, E, A, M, interesting components of science and technology, to music appreciation activities, it leads appreciation classes in an activity-centered, self-directed learning and away from the trap of passive class progress.
2) By carrying out various appreciation and experience activities that utilizes the components of S, T, E, A and M within a limited are of appreciation class, it cultivates a connectional frame of thinking that allows to connect each musical elements, experience music in a variety of ways and understand music in multifaceted perspectives.
3) As students guide themselves through tasks, from planning to finish, they are able to develop problem solving skills, and the small group cooperative learning courses teaches them ways to communicate and work together with other members of society.
4) The method allows for teachers and students to engage in interactive classes, in which solutions to problems are explored through discussions and conversations as opposed to rote-learning in which knowledge is unilaterally provided from teacher to student. Additionally, through the process of sharing knowledge between members, students are able to connect different information together and experience opportunities to generate new ideas and knowledge.
