The United States of America is a democratic country that has a goal of spreading democracy to the world, assisting other states in achieving democracy in their own states, assisting these states in maintaining democracy, and recognize and condemn states that disallow their people from choosing leaders in a fair, transparent election. However, when the Philippines, under President Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law that started his authoritarian rule in the country for years, the United States under President Richard Nixon did not openly condemn him. Some factors may be due to the number of accomplishments and the leadership qualities observed in President Marcos, he was considered as an indispensable leader in the Philippines for the US in the region. As a young man, he was full of talent and charisma that could influence a lot of people. When he came into power as the President of the Philippines, the US were impressed and were swayed to support him. Even though there may be a lot who are against him, his anti-communism views were greatly valued by the US and the Nixon administration. And along with his wife that who supports him and is also a force to reckon with, a lot of people were influenced by them. Marcos is not only one considered to be important, the Philippine archipelago, with its geo-political advantage in the region is important to the US especially that the US has a strong influence in the Philippines. With the Martial Law in place, there are a lot of benefits that would be brought to both countries. As having a military base in the Philippines could open up a lot of opportunities for the US to connect to the Philippines neighboring countries in Asia. Due to the insurgencies caused by the Communist movements in Central Luzon, there was an increase in crime in not only the capital, but also in rural areas of the country.

The proclamation of the Martial Law was to be used to control these communist movements in Central Luzon and the rest of the country.

With the rise of communism in neighboring countries of the Philippines, as well as the coming strengthening of the Cold War, the proclamation of Martial Law by President Marcos was just in time to stop the domino effect that the communism has done in the region. Ensuring that the man in place, which is President Marcos, who is known for his pro-Americanism and his anti-communism beliefs, the US have a lesser problem in dealing with the rising number of states that were becoming communistic.
