 본 연구에서는 제니탈이미지에 대한 이론적 고찰과 여성이 지닌 제니탈이미지의 특성을 바탕으로 제니탈이미지 척도를 개발하고 타당화를 시도하였다. 또한 제니탈이미지에 따른 결혼만족을 분석하였으며 제니탈이미지와 결혼만족의 관계에서 성 만족의 매개효과를 구조방정식 모형을 통해 검증하였다.

연구 1에서는 제니탈이미지의 척도를 개발하고 타당화하였다. 제니탈이미지 척도는 제니탈자기이미지와 제니탈배우자이미지 2요인으로 구성하였으며 109 문항의 예비문항으로 탐색적 요인분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과 문항이 2개 이하인 요인과 요인계수가 .30미만의 문항, 주관적 표현의 문항을 삭제하였다. 이에 제니탈자기이미지의 하위요인인 성기능, 성 불안, 성기지각, 성 관계지각, 성행위동기와 제니탈배우자이미지의 하위요인인 성행위동기, 성 만족, 성 불안, 성관계지각의 9요인 37문항으로 확정하였다. 또한 척도의 타당도 검증을 위해 확인적 요인분석 및 제니탈이미지와 밀접한 관련이 있는 변인들을 측정하는 척도들과의 상관분석을 통해 수렴타당도와 준거 관련(공존)타당도를 검증하였다.

이를 위해 1차적으로 일반 여성 170명에게 사전조사를 하여 제니탈이미지 척도 237개의 예비문항을 선정하였다. 예비문항 조사를 토대로 109문항의 제니탈이미지 척도를 개발하고 이를 2차적으로 일반여성 410명과 산부인과 내원 여성 170명에게 설문지를 배포하여 수거된 설문지 중 결측치가 있거나 불성실하게 응답한 자료를 뺀 371명의 자료를 분석에 사용하였다. 그 결과를 토대로 미국에서 개발된 기존의 제니탈이미지 척도의 문항과 비교하여 37개의 제니탈이미지 척도문항을 선정하였다. 제니탈이미지척도의 신뢰도와 타당도 연구를 위해 410명의 일반여성과 170명의 산부인과 내원여성을 대상으로, 척도를 실시하고 그 결과를 확인적 요인 분석하여 요인구조를 확인하고 신뢰도를 평가하였다. 또한 미국의 제니탈자기이미지평가 척도가 본 연구자가 개발한 제니탈이미지 척도의 요인에 대한 수렴타당도 검증(동형검사)을 통해 양 척도들의 상관이 유의함이 확인되었다.

연구 2에서의 연구변인은 기존 연구결과에서 제니탈이미지와 성 만족, 결혼만족의 예측변인들로 선정하였다. 제니탈이미지는 성 만족과 결혼만족에 영향을 미칠 것이라는 연구결과들(Herbenick, Reece, Schick, Sanders, Dodge & Fortenberry, 2010; Meltzer & McNulty, 2010)을 토대로 성 만족을 제니탈이미지와 결혼만족의 매개변인으로 가정하고 이를 검정하였다.

이를 위해 제니탈이미지요인에 따른 결혼만족도의 차이를 분석하였다. 그 결과 제니탈이미지 요인이 긍정적일수록 결혼만족도의 수준은 높을 것으로 예측된다. 한편 성 만족과 결혼만족의 관계에 제니탈이미지가 매개하는 과정을 구조방정식 모형으로 분석하였다. 또한 제니탈이미지를 하나의 잠재변인으로 간주하여 최종모델은 제니탈이미지와 결혼만족간의 관계를 잘 설명할 수 있는 적합한 경로모형임을 확인하였다. 이후 제니탈이미지 유형구분 연구 및 결혼만족과의 관계 연구 수행에 있어서 제니탈이미지를 고려하는 것의 중요성과 함의점을 논의하였다.
