Listening is a prerequisite for effective communication, but many foreign language students have a hard time in listening. One of the root causes of this problem are the different stress patterns in English. When listening to English, foreign language students have a tendency to miss the content words of a sentence because they focus on every word of a sentence.
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the effects of teaching sentence-stressed content words to underachieving students using movies in English. It is also to verify an effective English teaching strategies to improve high school underachievers' listening abilities as well as their recognition of English sentence-stress and affective domains such as interest and self-directed learning. The movie used for the class was chosen to suit their level.
Thirty-two students whose English scores were in the bottom 18% of the students in their grade were selected. Sixteen students were put into each experimental and control groups. After diagnostic testing and reviewing of individual diagnostic profile cards, considering the student's level, it was decided to have time for preparation in the first semester. Both the experimental group and the control group class consisted of 30 periods. The experimental group was focused on learning sentence stresses. The control group was focused on learning listening through solving EBS English listening questions. After finishing the preparation period, the actual thesis began in the second semester, also for 30 periods for each group. The experimental group was focused on recognizing and picking up the stressed content words in the class using an English movie, whereas the control group was focused on solving English listening questions in an EBS (Educational Broadcasting System) listening textbook.
3rd year middle school listening tests provided by EBS were selected as a pre and post-test to measure the participants' English listening comprehension. The test score of the subjects was compared to check their current listening comprehension abilities in relation to other students. Each questionnaire was used to check their changes in the degree of recognition of sentence stress and the affective domain of the participants. Underachieving students' profile cards (Individual diagnostic profile card) were used for an in-depth examination of their prior knowledge or thesis in English, as well as their progress in this thesis.
The results obtained from the thesis are as follows. First, focusing on English sentence-stressed content words listening class using English movies improved the participants' listening comprehension. Second, the thesis had significant impact on the cognition of the English sentence stress of the participants. Third, the thesis had an positive influence on the affective domains of the participants such as interest and self-directed learning. Most students changed positively. Last, the subject's profiling cards (Individual diagnostic profile cards) measured ‘the degree of improvement in listening comprehension ability' during this thesis.
This thesis suggests that there would be an improvement in listening ability and student engagement in class if focusing on English sentence-stressed content words using English movies were used regularly. Utilizing movies makes students more sensitive to sentence stress so that they can listen more comprehensibly. When movies are presented to underachieving students, we should consider the degree of educational importance and difficulty. Based on the above results, sentence-stressed content words listening can be recommended as an effective way to enhance the underachieving students' listening ability.
