이 연구는 하구언과 방조제 건설로 인해 인위적으로 조성된 연안 호수의 수질 변화를 이해하기 위해 수행되었으며, 금강하구역과 새만금호에서 지난 10년~20년간 관측된 현장관측 자료를 바탕으로 환경 변화를 비교·분석하였다. 이러한 장기간의 자료 분석을 통해 금강호의 수질이 금강하구에 어떠한 영향을 주는지 이해하고, 현재 새만금호의 수질 변화가 앞으로 새만금 외측해역에 미칠 영향을 예측하고자 한다.
금강하구역은 1994년에 하구언이 건설됨에 따라 금강하구와 금강호에서 SS는 감소했고, 수리적 체류시간, Chl-α, NO₃-N, NH₄-N은 증가하였으며, 이들 모두 금강호에서 증감의 변화가 더욱 크게 나타났다. 상류로부터 유입된 PO₄-P는 호 내 APP (autochthonous primary production)에 의해 100% 이상 소모되는 것으로 나타났다. 금강하구와 금강호의 수질 및 환경인자 측정치에 대한 PCA (principal component analysis)결과들은 풍수기에는 두 환경이 밀접하게 관련되어 있으나, 갈수기에는 서로 독립된 수질 특성을 나타냈으며, 이것은 하구언의 수문 조작에 의한 영향으로 판단된다. 금강하구와 금강호에서 수질의 변화는 하구언 건설 이전에 비하여 금강호뿐만 아니라 하구언 인근 하구역에 유기물질을 포함한 퇴적물이 축적되어 PO₄-P의 거동이 변하고 있음을 나타내고 있다.
새만금 방조제가 2006년 4월에 최종 체절되면서 새만금 내측 수역은 해수가 제한적으로 유통되는 반폐쇄적인 인공 해수호가 되었고, 호 내 표층수의 SS는 감소한 반면, Chl-α, NH₄-N, PO₄-P, SiO₂-Si는 증가하였다. 혼합모델로부터 저층수의 NH₄-N, PO₄-P, SiO₂-Si는 주로 하계에 증가되고 있는 것으로 나타났고, 특히 SiO₂-Si는 하계뿐만 아니라 춘계에도 높은 증가를 보였다. 표층수와 저층수에서 SiO₂-Si의 변화는 SiO₂-Si가 재부유, 해저 지하수 유출 (SGD), 저층 용출 등에 의해서 복잡하게 영향을 받고 있는 것으로 판단된다. 물수지와 염분수지에 의해 계산된 SGD는 하천수를 통해 유입되는 물량에 평균 60%를 차지하는 것으로 나타났으며, 호 내에서 SGD에 의한 영양염의 내부공급이 매우 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 판단된다.
금강호와 새만금호에서 하구언과 방조제가 건설된 이후 두 환경에서 생지화학적 변화 과정들의 차이는 호수의 규모와 담수의 영향 등이 서로 다르기 때문에 나타나는 현상으로 판단되며, 아마도 상대적으로 규모가 작고 담수의 영향을 많이 받는 금강호에서 이러한 변화가 빠르게 진행되고, 새만금호에서는 느리게 진행되는 것으로 판단된다. 따라서 향후 새만금호의 생지화학적 변화 과정들은 현재 금강호의 변화과정과 유사할 것으로 판단되고, 새만금 외측해역과 금강하구의 관계 역시 유사할 것으로 예상된다. 따라서 금강하구언 인근의 하구역에 부유물질 및 유기물질이 침전되는 현상은 향후 새만금 외측해역에 유기물질이 지속적으로 침전될 가능성을 지시하며, 결국 금강하구보다 상대적으로 수심이 깊은 새만금 외측해역에서 여름철 강한 수직 성층 구조의 저층에서 빈산소 수괴가 형성될 가능성도 있다.
이상의 결과들로부터 하구언이나 방조제 건설로 인해, 조성된 호수 내부는 물론이고 외해역의 수질이 저하되는 것으로 판단된다. 특히, 본 연구결과에서 새만금호 내 인의 내부부하는 전체 유입부하의 최소한 40% 이상을 차지하는 것으로 산정되었다. 인이 일차생산의 제한인자로 작용하고 있는 점을 감안한다면, 호 내·외측의 수질 개선을 위해서는 인에 의한 내부부하의 저감 방안 등을 심각하게 고려해야 할 것으로 판단된다.
