본 논문은 11.5~18%의 Cr과 0.15~1.2% C가 함유된 마르텐사이트계의 스테인리스 STS 420J2 강재의 오스테나이트화와 템퍼링 조건에 따른 조직변화 및 기계적성질이 템퍼취성에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가에 관한 연구내용을 담고 있다.
마르텐사이트 스테인리스강은 오스테나이트화(Austenitizing) 가열 후 �칭에 의해 마르텐사이트 조직으로 되며, 적절한 내식성과 함께 인성과 강도, 내마모성, 피로강도가 요구되는 분야에서 특수용도로 사용된다.
특히 STS 420J2는 �칭 후 경도가 HRC50 이상이며 내식성이 양호한 강종으로서 내식성과 함께 강도 및 경도가 요구되는 부품에 광범위하게 사용된다.
본 연구에서는 STS 420J2를 하수 종말처리장의 슬러지(sludge)를 퍼내는 체인부품으로 사용할 때에 부품간의 접촉부 마모현상과 동시에 폐수의 각종 오염물질이 부품접촉부와 반응하여 부식이 촉진되어, 조기에 파손되는 파괴 메카니즘 현상을 규명하고자 선택하게 되었다.
이를 위하여 STS 420J2 강재를 960℃, 1000℃, 1040℃에서 각각 3시간씩 오스테나이트화 한 후, 스테인리스강의 템퍼취성 구간으로 알려진 350℃, 450℃, 500℃, 550℃, 600℃에서 2~12시간 템퍼링하여 조직 및 기계적성질의 변화를 관찰하였다.
본 연구로부터 얻어진 결과들을 요약하면 다음과 같다.
가열온도가 낮아 조직이 충분히 오스테나이트화 되지 못한 경우에는 �칭 후 조직내에 미용해 탄화물 및 페라이트(α)가 잔류하여 사용할 때 마모 및 부식의 촉발과 함께 파손을 야기할 수 있는 것으로 조사되었다.
또한, STS 420J2 강종은 유냉에 의한 담금질 경도가 HRC55 이상의 경질이므로 템퍼링을 한 후 사용하는데 대부분이 400~550℃의 취성온도 구간을 피하여 뜨임 열처리 할 것을 권장하고 있다. 본 연구의 실험결과에 의하면, 템퍼링의 가열온도가 500℃ 이상에서는 급격한 경도의 저하를 가져오므로 내마모성을 필요로 하는 부품에는 적합하지 않은 것으로 나타났으며, 각 조건별 템퍼링(350~600℃)에서 가열시간이 2시간보다 더 길더라도 경도 및 강도의 급격한 저하는 나타나지 않았다.
내식성은 저온템퍼링에서 양호하지만 템퍼링온도가 올라갈수록 저하되며, 이는 Cr 탄화물의 석출로 인한 기지(matrix)의 Cr 결핍현상이 주요 원인인 것으로 확인되었다.
오스테나이트화 온도가 증가할수록 결정립이 성장하여 템퍼취성 현상이 좀 더 뚜렷이 나타날 것으로 예상이 되나, 이후 템퍼취성 온도구간에서 템퍼링을 실시한 경우에도 충격치가 저하되지 않고 오히려 인성이 증가하였다. 이는 템퍼링에 의하여 기지내에 Cr 탄화물의 석출이 입계뿐만 아니라 입내에까지 고르게 분포하여 템퍼취성 현상을 감소시키며, 오히려 인성을 증가시킨 것으로 판단된다.
따라서 본 실험결과에 의하면 STS 420J2 강재는 소재의 탄화물 분포와 형상, 가공조건에 따라 오스테나이트화 온도가 달라져야 하며, 템퍼링에 의하여 템퍼취성 구간에서의 기계적성질도 향상될 수 있음을 보여준다.
이 논문은 각각의 오스테나이트화 온도별로 실험내용을 독립하여 기술하였으며, 종합적으로 요약하여 마르텐사이트계 STS 420J2 스테인리스강의 열처리조건에 따른 기계적성질의 특성 및 내식성, 템퍼취성의 발생유무를 파악하고자 하였다.
