The purpose of this study is, by improving or enhancing self-esteem, communication and relationship within a family through family art therapy, to provide related fields with an academic basis and to suggest a framework for systematic understanding as to positive changes on the whole of family life.
Research subjects are a middle school girl (14 years old), her brother and parents, residing in G-city. There were a total of 34 sessions of group art therapy during ten months period (from July 25, 2006 to May 28, 2007), one session a week lasting 90-120 minutes.
Research instruments employed for comparative data analysis are pre-test, post-test, and follow-up test for each of Measure for Self-Esteem, Measure for Communication, and Family System Diagnosis. Further employed was a qualitative analysis of the observed and recorded data collected from all the activities of each session including therapy-program contents and attitude changes of the family embers, in order to judge if the group art therapy program was indeed effective on improving the family's self-esteem, communication and relationship.
The results obtained from the study are as follows.
First, family art therapy shows an effect on the family's self esteem.
Initially, each member of the family thought that he or she was not important in the family, accused other members of his or her misfortune, displayed defiant and defensive attitude against other family members with blame and complaint, were cut from each other and exhibited withdrawn behavior because of emotional suppression they did on themselves. After the middle of the program when the parents admitted their faults on parenting, the family started expressing openly their thoughts and feelings and tried to listen to others with receptive patience. Then, the family became able to regain self-esteem and emotionally stable attitude through mutual support and encouragement.
Second, family art therapy gives a positive effect on the family communication.
Initially, the communicative pattern the family members talked to each other was blamable, aggressive, negative, and disconformable. But later after receiving many therapy sessions, they became considerate and supportive of each other and showed a positive discussion pattern with family conformity.
Third, family art therapy exhibited positive influence on the family relations.
Initially, there was no discussion within the family members who were alienated from each other and showed negative relationship with blame and anger toward to each other. However, after the parents admitted faults on their past parenting style which was discovered through the therapy sessions, the children became less blamable, less angry, and communicate with rather positive and conformable attitude so as to be able to make emotional closeness between the members.
To conclude, since family art therapy has been verified that the therapy program has positive effectiveness on family self-esteem, communication and relationship, it can be said that family art therapy is a useful alternative in not only bringing a dysfunctional family positive changes on the whole family life, but also using it as a family therapy for the betterment of any healthy functional family.
