초록보기 더보기
In the study of brain functions, the analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs) provides useful information that supplements the knowledge gained from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), which has a poor time resolution. One of the most important aspects of ERP analysis is the reliable decomposition of the ERPs into functionally distinct peak components, thereby enabling the localization of the equivalent dipole sources corresponding to those components. Thus far, this decomposition has typically been performed through independent component analysis (ICA) or principal component analysis (PCA); however, these methods have fundamental shortcomings for the separation of statistically dependent and mutually correlated peak sources such as those in ERPs. Here a gradient descent method that exploits the physical measures of waveforms in addition to an adaptive peak-searching method for the blind separation of singlepeak-pulse (SPP) components mixed in the ERPs is proposed. In a simulated ERP experiment, it was found that the proposed method separated strongly dependent SPP sources with excellent performance, whereas ICA failed to separate the same sources. To confirm the applicability of the proposed method in a real ERP application, it was applied to real averaged ERP data from a word repetition experiment. The locations of the equivalent dipoles corresponding to the separated components determined by the proposed method were found to agree with the results of previous fMRI studies related to word repetition effects. In contrast, ICA failed to correctly identify the dipole locations.
