In order to classify and discuss the various toothbrushes used by Seoulites and to set the appropriate criteria for selecting toothbrushes for the adults to select proper toothbrushes, the author collected 683 toothbrushes which were used by 683 adults residing in Seoul capital city in their home at first. They were classified by 9 criteria and discussed. The size of the toothbrush. the bending direction of brush handle, the width of brush handle, the head size, the kind of bristles, the stiffness of bristles, the number of tuft rows, the number of tuft columns and the total number of tufts were the criteria for classifying and discussing toothbrushes collected.
The obtained results were as follows :
1. In Seoul capital city, straight handled toothbrushes have been used in the only 10.1% of adults, wide handled toothbrushes in the 85.8% and small headed toothbrushes in the only 56.0%. Even the toothbrushes for children have been used in the 1.8% of adults.
2. The toothbrushes made of nylon bristles have been used in all the adults. But the toothbrushes made of nylon bristles with middle stiffness have been used in 67.4% of the adults.
3. The only 0.1% of adults is using the toothbrushes tufted in six rows and nobody the toothbrush tufted in two columns.
4. Almost all the adults have used the toothbrushes with 31-40 tufts or 41-50 tufts.
5. It was concluded that almost all the adults have not only selected the toothbrushes by the inappropriate criteria for selecting toothbrushes, but also used the improper toothbrushes.
6. It was presumed that the wide straight handled and small headed toothbrushes made of nylon bristles with middle stiffness and tufted in two columns and six rows should be recommended for the adults as a proper toothbrush.
