Background : With the development of high-technology, there has been significant reflection on human innate abilities and roles, leading to a heightened focus on the importance of Creative Problem-Solving(CPS) skills. While existing research suggests that CPS in VR is more effective in stimulating human creativity, specific processes and factors of the VR experience that have a positive impact have not been thoroughly explored. Therefore, a novel approach considering VR environments and a re-evaluation of user-centric VR impact factors are needed.
Methods : This study aims to propose methods to maximize creativity within VR, increasing the efficiency of the CPS. Building on the premise that VR can serve as a stimulus for ideation, we have developed a process and framework for applying VR experiential factors to CPS, drawing from prior research and cognitive theories. The proposed experiential factors consist of four overarching categories and are further categorized into 12 specific factors based on user and system context. To confirm their suitability, we conducted case analysis of three VR applications and user experiments.
Results : This experiment involved 6 participants divided into two groups (A, B), with each group undergoing one session. Participants discussed solutions to problem-solving using three selected services. Using the selected 3 VR services, the participants discussed individual CPS topics and assessed the effectiveness of each factor through observational surveys and interviews. The analysis showed that the suggested factors were found to be necessary in most areas, with a notable discovery that [Spatial factors], in particular, have the most significant impact on CPS process within VR. Additionally, the interview results indicated that only Group A derived specific problem-solving strategies, but both groups received new and positive stimuli from VR services during the CPS. The revised model resulting from the experiments is presented as the final guideline.
Conclusion : This study has introduced a model and identified experiential factors within VR to enhance the efficiency of the CPS process. Through case analyses and experiments to validate their effectiveness, we finalized VR design guidelines for improved CPS efficiency. The study aimed to establish an integrated CPS process within VR, utilizing stimulation and cognitive theories. By applying the proposed models and factors, we sought to create a foundation for future VR services tailored to CPS, effectively stimulating creativity. It aims the potential of rapidly evolving VR technology, stimulating creativity, and proposing new experiential values in CPS.
