The growing interest in epigraphics(金石) from the 18th century, and the subsequent fervor of the culture of epigraphics appreciation, was gradually translated into the influence of epigraphy from the 19th century. In the late 19th century, the iconography of epigraphics combined with printed paper in the Qing dynasty became a major backdrop for people’ s interest in epigraphics. The influx of Ming and Qing Dynasty epigraphy books(金石書) in the 19th century satisfied the intellectual curiosity generated by the visual interest in epigraphics, and were actively utilized in the emergence of new works of art such as Wadangdo(瓦當圖) and Jongjeongdo(鐘鼎圖) in the late 19th century. Xuanhe Bogutu(宣和博古圖), Jiguzhai zhongding yiqi kuanzhi(積古齋鐘鼎彝 器款識), and Jinshisu(金石索) served as the main canonical texts for contemporary scribes. Wadangdo and Jongjeong folding screens were the product of collectors’ desire for uncontrolled luxury in the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as the wishes of the patrons and artists of the time for the prosperity of the royal family. I believe that the ‘reading’ of epigraphics through various epigraphy books, coupled with the increased visual interest in epigraphics, shifted to the ‘viewing’ of epigraphics against the backdrop of these contemporary phenomena, and in the transition, the meaning of auspiciousness and longevity through ‘viewing’ came into play.
