This research analyzes the relationship between group portraits of surgeons that emerged in the early 17th century Netherlands and anatomical theaters. The study focuses on the situations represented within the specific genre of group portraits of surgeons in anatomical theaters discussing how the popular spectacle of anatomical theaters and the genre of group portraits of surgeons influenced each other and evolved. Throughout this process the study infers the complex relationships between the artistic representation of anatomical theaters within group portraits and the social realities, such as the education of surgeons’ guilds and the political ambitions of anatomical lecturers, in the context of the surgical community at that time. Ultimately, the research aims to explore the origins and development of group portraits of surgeons through the emergence, evolution, and disappearance of anatomical theaters depicted in the paintings.
