The paper is an analysis of one of Dong Jin Kim’s (1913-2009) representative works, Azalea Flower, a musical composition based on the poem Azalea Flower by Sowol Kim(1902-1934). Dong Jin Kim’s Azalea Flower addresses how the aesthetic of the Korean han expressed in poetry might be achieved in music. In Sowol Kim's Azalea Flower, the negative and positive emotions of han are expressed in a complex way; interestingly, the conflicting feelings lead to musical duality in Dong jin Kim’s Azalea Flower. The song features triads with added 6ths and 4ths and Saeya harmony including the 9th or the 4th substituted for the 3rd of the triads that cause the dissonances. The dual interpretation of these chords helps to express the complex and dual feelings of the poetic narrator. In addition, the rest in the last two measures of the piano accompaniment is also used as a tool to reinforce the poetic meaning.
