This paper reconstructs Jacobi's critique of Kant, reveals Jacobi's influence on Schleiermacher, and illuminates the view that the achievement of this influence helps to indicate the roots of postmodernity. Jacobi’s philosophy, which emerged between Kant and Fichte, clearly shows the transition from transcendental philosophy to early romanticism. Jacobi and Schleiermacher's discourse on the other (i.e den anderen) argues with Kant's philosophy of subjectivity and attempts to innovate subjectivity. Jacobi regards the other as a realm where subjectivity cannot internalize and explains it in the dimension of realism. The other is the presupposition of knowledge given outside of consciousness as the absolute and the immediate. This presupposition is confirmed in Schleiermacher as a pre-reflective cogito. Schleiermacher's immediate self-consciousness and feeling of absolute dependence are the presupposition of the reflective self and logical awareness. The fact that among individuals there are aspects of others that cannot be explained by individuals shows the limitations of the philosophy of subjectivity and at the same time opens the possibility of discourse on horizons beyond subjectivity. Through Jacobi’s and Schleiermacher’s concept of feeling and belief that operate before rational thinking, the relationship between modernism and postmodernism can be confirmed.
