Most industries have been in crisis due to the prolonged impact of COVID-19, but in the content and media field, K-content consumption by Korean Wave (Hallyu) consumers increased as related industries grew rapidly around the global OTT (Over the Top) platform. According to the 2022 Global Hallyu Trend Data from the Korea Institute for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE), content that requires face-to-face consumption, such as beauty, fashion, and food, has decreased as compared to the years prior to the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, while consumption of non-face-to-face Hallyu video content has increased significantly. Although COVID-19 has had a negative impact on the consumption of some Hallyu content, it has had a positive effect on Korean video content such as dramas, movies, and entertainment, giving Hallyu content an opportunity to attract more attention than prior to COVID-19. Previous studies have focused on the impact of Korean Wave content on the image of Korea, product purchase intention, and intention to visit Korea. In addition, most of the existing studies on Korean Wave content have focused on K-pop and dramas or on the entire Korean Wave content, so studies that only target Korean video content (drama, movie, and entertainment) have been rarely conducted.
To fill this research gap, this study empirically examined the effects of changes in K-video content consumption after COVID-19 on attitudes toward K-video content, product purchase intentions, and intentions to visit Korea, as well as recommendation intentions, with a particular focus on the MZ generation in China and Japan. Based on an online survey conducted from November 5 to December 8, 2021, responses from MZ generation members in China (450 samples) and in Japan (375 samples) were analyzed.
Four main empirical results emerged. First, among the MZ generation of China and Japan, changes in consumption of K-video content (drama and movie) after COVID-19 affected their attitudes about K-video content. Second, changes in K-video content consumption after COVID-19 had a positive effect on the purchase of Korean products, visits to Korea, and intentions to recommend Korean products and services.
Third, in both the Chinese and Japanese MZ generations, attitudes toward entertainment, dramas, and movies have an effect on the intentions to purchase Korean products and visit Korea. Only attitudes toward dramas and entertainment were found to have an effect on the intentions to recommend Korean products or services.
Finally, among the Chinese and Japanese MZ generations, the Chinese MZ generation had stronger propensity than the Japanese MZ generation in attitudes toward K-video content, product purchase intentions, and visiting Korea, as well as recommending Korean products and services.
This study offers several important implications for the continuous and stable expansion of the Korean Wave. First, it shows that the demand for Korean Wave and K-video content is steady in China and Japan, which are traditional Korean Wave core markets, and that these markets need to be actively maintained and developed. Second, the results of this study suggest that in order to create a new Hallyu boom in China and Japan, it is necessary to differentiate K-video content for each market and that content should be weighted toward and supported by differentiated marketing strategies for each country and generation. Third, it is necessary to analyze the consumption patterns of the MZ generation, who actively enjoy K-video content by using social media (SNS), regardless of the political situation, and to improve publicity and marketing approaches for them and build a system. Last, now is the time to establish a Hallyu marketing policy for the post-COVID-19 economy.
