This study examines the impact of the aging of Korean domestic automotive parts companies on their innovativeness. Considering that a firm's innovation has a duality of quantitative(innovation rate) and qualitative innovations(innovation impact), the influence of a firm age on innovation activities is likely to differ depending on the type of innovation. Firstly, in the early stages, firms may find it challenging to perform innovation activities due to resource and information limitations. However, as firms grow, these limitations are overcome. Nevertheless, as the age increases, the internal inertia within the firm becomes another obstacle to innovation activities, resulting in a reverse U-shaped relationship between firm age and quantitative innovation. On the other hand, for innovation impact, it demands justification and commercialization efforts for new elements, making the firm's experience, know-how, infrastructure, and network crucial conditions for successful innovation activities. Therefore, there is a higher probability of a positive relationship between firm age and qualitative innovation. This study proposes that the relationship between auto-part supplier’s age and their innovation will be moderated by the partnered overseas entry with current buyer. With regards to quantitative innovation, inter-firm collaborative networks change the strategy, operation method, and resource distribution of new firms, reducing the extent to which innovativeness is strengthened according to age, while reducing the structural inertia of aged firms to innovate. In terms of qualitative innovation, aged firms with capabilities to effectively utilize the resources of complete car assemblers through joint overseas expansion are likely to achieve successful innovation impact. To verify the above arguments, this study collected panel data from 108 Korean automotive parts companies and conducted negative binomial regression analysis, confirming that all the proposed hypotheses are supported.
