This study seeks a theoretical basis for the active audience of modern popular culture found in Bertolt Brecht’s Episches Theater, and examines how this is transformed into film. This paper discusses Brecht’s Verfremdung effect through an analysis of Holy motors (2013) and Annette (2021) by French film director Leos Carax. Specifically, it illuminates from the viewpoints of ‘method acting/theatrical gestus’ and ‘intervention/contemplation’ for both actors and audiences. Holy Motors and Annette are not simple spectacle images, but artistic attempts to redefine the traditional status and mutual relationship between actors and audiences. Therefore, the journey to find the dialectical aesthetics of verfremdung effect in director Carax’s films is also the work of expanding Brecht’s influence that has already permeated modern popular culture.
