Park Jung-yoon’s novel Princess Bari was selected for the 2nd Honbool Literature Prize and has been recognized for its literary worth, and it is also the successful rewriting of Korea's narrative myths, The Bari Princess. The novel centers on two issues. First, the suffering of the modern-day Bari princess(-es) who suffer from the double-oppression of patriarchy and capitalism. Second, the practical limitations inherent in the existing androcentric ideology of motherhood. Therefore, this paper focuses on the aspects of care that Bari performs as ‘omnipresent daughter’ and ‘omnipresent mother’. Bari's care has important meanings as an extension of filial piety and motherhood. In particular, the novel is an exemplary case that reaffirms the importance of ‘re-visioning’ old texts, as it allows us to imagine the possibility of ‘expansion of care’ outside of the existing kinship-centered care networks while fully respecting the care-oriented attitudes of both ideologies of filial piety and motherhood ideologies.
