This essay explores a possible medium specificity model after post-media discourse, based on the assertion that an aesthetic experience distinct from the mundane is only possible when an autonomous artistic field is preserved. In a time of planetary crisis, aesthetic experiences allow us to encounter non-human beings and to construct a different world in the face of the planetary crisis. We compare and examine the post-medium discourse suggested by Rosalind Krauss, and the post-media discourse developed by Lev Manovich, Peter Weibel, and Nicolas Bourriaud. In conclusion, this study proposes a new type of medium specificity that can still function in contemporary society through the American philosopher Timothy Morton’s object-oriented ontology. The interconnectedness of all beings makes autonomy impossible for art: It is precisely this revelation gives art its autonomy. Moreover, every artwork has its own specificity as it is an object per se with a hidden essnece hidden essence.
