미대륙의 1차대각성운동(The First Great Awakening)은 회개와 중생을 강조한 갱신운동(Renewal Movement)이었다.
The First Great Awakening in America was a renewal movement that emphasized repentance and rebirth. “New Birth,” which is the motto of time, refers to “Born Again,” a more familiar expression today, and this movement was a repentance movement emphasizing experience. This movement is also known as “birth pang” that awakens from sin and starts a new spiritual life, resulting in spiritual vitality and church growth. However, the Great Awakening has caused another pain that led to the division of the church as it collided with those who opposed this experience-centered movement. The road to suturing conflicts and reaching reconciliation has never been easy, calling for the growing pain toward maturity. Thus, this study examines the positive and negative sides of this movement. This research is based on the archival materials and cases centered around Theodorus Jacobus Frelinghuysen (1691-1747), an initial key figure of this movement.
